Pupil leadership at St Michael’s

At St Michael’s, pupil leadership is a key expression of our Christian vision, of growing in body, mind and spirit.  We believe leadership should reflect this growth—strengthening character, building wisdom, and inspiring service to others.

From Year 7, pupils are offered a wide range of leadership opportunities such as Bridge Buddies, School Council, the Social Action Team, Eco Council, and librarian roles. These early experiences support personal growth, boost confidence, and build a strong sense of belonging and responsibility within the school community.

As they move through the school, pupils can apply for further roles including peer and subject mentors, worship and wellbeing leads, sports and performing arts captains, prefects, and ultimately, Head Boy and Head Girl.  Each role is designed to encourage growth of the mind through initiative and problem-solving, growth of the spirit through service and reflection, and growth of the body through teamwork, resilience, and active participation.

Pupils are also invited to lead collective worship, contribute to school improvement, and engage in wider service projects such as the Zambia Project and the Archbishop’s Young Leaders Award. These experiences help them deepen their understanding of the world and their ability to bring about positive change.

At St Michael’s, leadership is not about status—it is about service.  Inspired by the example of Jesus, our pupils are encouraged to lift others up, challenge injustice, and lead with compassion, integrity, and purpose.  Whether through campaigning, volunteering, or mentoring, they are prepared to be active citizens—growing in body, mind, and spirit every step of the way.
