Personal and Spiritual Development
At St Michael’s, personal and spiritual development is at the heart of our theologically rooted Christian vision- growing in body, mind, and spirit. This vision shapes our whole-school approach that supports each child through regular worship, character-building, leadership opportunities, and a broad curriculum where Christian values are present across all subjects.
Spiritual development is supported through daily practices such as prayer, reflection, and creative expression. It is also nurtured through shared experiences—moments of wonder in nature, working together in lessons, and forming positive relationships. We encourage pupils to connect with themselves, with others, with the wider world, and with God, creating a culture where spirituality is part of everyday life.
Our commitment to personal development is equally strong. Pupils take part in PSHE, careers guidance, learning about British values, and a wide range of activities outside the classroom. From Year 7 through to Year 11, they are offered experiences such as cultural visits, leadership roles, performing arts, and community work. Programmes like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Christian Values Enrichment Days, work experience, and university visits help pupils build confidence, develop resilience, and prepare for their future.
At St Michael’s, we aim to help our pupils become thoughtful, responsible, and active members of society, with strong values and the skills they need for life beyond school.
At St Michael’s, personal and spiritual development is deeply rooted in the school’s theologically grounded Christian vision for every pupil to “grow and flourish in body, mind and spirit.” We aim to encourage the holistic growth of each child through a rich blend of worship, character education, leadership opportunities, and a wide-ranging curriculum that integrates Christian values across all subjects. Spiritual development is nurtured through daily practices such as prayer, reflection, and creative expression, as well as through moments of awe and wonder in nature, collaborative learning, and meaningful relationships. The school community is encouraged to connect with self, others, the world, and the divine, creating a culture where spirituality is lived and experienced in everyday life.
Personal development is equally comprehensive, encompassing PSHE, careers education, British values, and a wide array of wider-curricular activities. Pupils engage in a progressive programme that includes cultural visits, leadership roles, performing arts, and community service. From Year 7 through to Year 11, pupils participate in initiatives such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Christian Values Enrichment Days, work experience, and university visits, all designed to build confidence, resilience, and essential life skills. The school’s commitment to developing responsible, respectful, and active citizens is evident in our emphasis on character growth, citizenship education, mental and physical well-being, and preparation for life beyond school.
