Headteacher's Welcome, Saint Michaels' Ethos and Values
I am delighted to introduce St. Michael’s Church of England High School to you. As a Church of England Academy within the Diocese of Blackburn, our values are rooted and grounded in the Christian faith.
We are very much a ‘team’ at St. Michael’s; staff, pupils, parents and governors work closely together to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to grow in body, mind and spirit; to flourish as a child of God and experience the joy and hope of ‘life in all its fullness’.
The highest expectations and aspirations are key features of our school life. This helps to create our vibrant learning community with pupils and staff demonstrating a real passion and zest for learning.
Serving God, pursuing excellence and celebrating the uniqueness of each individual are at the heart of our distinctive ethos as we strive to ‘be the best that we can be’. We create and sustain our caring, Christian community by encouraging positive, supportive relationships, based on Christian values and striking a genuine balance between the highest academic standards and opportunities for personal growth and character development.
In 2016 an impressive 89% of Year 11 achieved at least five or more A* - C grade passes including English and mathematics, the best in the school’s history. These results were matched in 2017 with 89% of pupils achieving at least five or more A*- C/ 9-4 passes, placing the school in the top 10% of non -selective schools nationally for attainment. We were equally delighted with our results in 2018 when pupils achieved an average ‘Attainment 8’ score of 59, meaning that the average GCSE grade was a grade 6 (B), with an amazing 91% of pupils achieving the basics measure of a pass at grades 9-4 in English and mathematics. These results once again placed the school in the top 10% of non- selective schools nationally for attainment and also for progress too. 2019 results reflect our continued pursuit of excellence with an ‘Attainment 8’ score of 58, 91% of pupils achieving a pass at grades 9-4 in English and mathematics and 74% achieving a strong pass (grade 5 and above) in English and mathematics. Further recognition of our high standards came in our ‘excellent’ SIAMS inspection in November 2018 and a Quality Mark for Holocaust Education in July 2019 (the reports are available on our website). However, we are not complacent and continue to develop in an innovative way.
I hope that our website provides you with a flavour of the life and ethos of St Michael’s Church of England High School, but should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
