Excellence within a Christian context
Education does not just take place in the confines of the curriculum; it is our experience at St Michael's that the participation in the wide range of extra curricular activities available plays a significant part in the overall development of our young people. Generally speaking the pupils who involve themselves in the wider life of the school enjoy school most and derive the greatest benefit from their time with us. In addition to the activities highlighted on this webpage we also have a Warhammer Club, a Fishing Club, a Pony Club and many subject related clubs.
The Karting Club
The school team was set up in 2001, the school now has eight karts and up to fifteen pupils accompanied by their parents. Two of our pupils have become this years National Champions. In short we are a friendly family orientated team looking for like-minded pupil/parent combinations to join our training and racing escapades; but beware, karting is addictive!

The Performing Arts - Achieving specialist status as a Performing Arts college was a welcome recognition of the excellence of Arts at St Michael's. Extensive opportunities exist for pupils of all ages and abilities to extend their talents and interests through our music, dance and drama provision.
Music - We have four choirs in both Lower and Upper school open to all pupils. Pupils may also audition for the Chapel Choir and its junior counter part, the Training Choir, both of which were formed for enhancing the worshipping life of the school. Our three bands and orchestra provide opportunities for the 200 or more pupils who receive instrumental tuition through school to develop their skills within ensemble playing. Children are encouraged to join the Training Band as soon as they acquire elementry skills and they progress into the Senior and Stage Bands, the former carrying eighty or more highly competent woodwind, brass and percussion players and the latter offering a smaller group the more demanding and challenging rhythms of popular jazz, blues and dances styles. Smaller ensembles and solo performance are an integral part of the department's work, and a number of 'academies' for our gifted and talented musicians allow pupils to manage and develop their own small groups. During the last two years our Steel Band has become extremely popular.
Dance
The Dance Department offers a range of dance opportunities including 'The Code' (Centre of Dance Excellence) and each year group has its own Dance Company. In addition we have a very popular All Boys Dance Company (ABDC). In Upper school, principal choreographers are nominated to assist Dance Captains in actually creating and teaching pieces for others dancers in the group. This in effect places total responsibility on the pupils to create, rehearse and perform the dance pieces. We are fortunate enough to be able to hold dance residencies for professional dance companies throughout the year and our GCSE Dance and Gifted and Talented pupils benefit greatly from working with a real variety of professional performers and choreographers e.g. The Rambert Dance Company, The Ludus Dance Company and The Random Dance Company to name but a few.

Drama
Drama has always been a very successful aspect of life at St Michael's and has contributed to the all round development of many of our pupils over the years. Our biannual school productions are renowned for their quality and high standards. Many pupils go on to study drama at A level. Last years Calamity Jane was an outstanding performance by such talented pupils and dedicated staff.
Bat Society
The Bat Society aims to promote awareness of an extremely misunderstood creature. This involves organising bat watches, inviting guest speakers into school, liaising with local community groups and acting as a holding point for injured bats as well as visiting bat sanctuaries. The Society is open to all years and currently has over 60 members.
Art Club
Two opportunities exist weekly for interested pupils; an after school club is run for Upper school pupils to enhance and extend their GCSE work and a lunchtime club exists for Lower school pupils who wish to develop their artistic skills.
Discovery Group
This is a Christian Activity Group which meets weekly with the aim of nurturing our young people as they grow in thier understanding of the Christian faith. Pupils take part in a variety of activities such as puzzles, games, drama, creative work, role play and Bible study, followed by a quiet time of prayer in the school chapel.
Physical Education
A multitude of opportunities are on offer as extra curricular acitivities such as Netball, Badminton, Dance, Rounders, Tennis, Football, Girls Football, Athletics, Basketball, Cricket and Fitness Clubs.
Cheerleading
St Michael's was the first secondary school in Britain to start cheerleading. The squads now have a membership of over 90 pupils who perform cheers, dances and stunts at events in school, at functions in the wider community and have cheered for Wigan Warriors Rugby Club. The squads also enter national competitions and have recently qualified for a prestigious American Championship in Nashville.
